and model train experiences in a wide variety
of settings.
TrainWorx is represented in some of the
finest venues ranging from Macy’s and the
New York Transit Museum at Grand Central
Terminal to corporate offices and custom
home layouts throughout the country. Roger
Farkash, Creative Director at T W Design
and TrainWorx is regarded by many in the
design community as one of the most skilled
and imaginative designers in the nation.
Roger’s work in the toy train industry has
been showcased in numerous publications,
including O Gauge Railroading Magazine,
The Lion Roars, LRRC's Inside Track, and
Lionel Nation 1 & 3 by TM Books & Video,
just to name a few. Roger’s years of
experience producing innovative and
carefully crafted themed experiences, as well
as advising the most celebrated model train
manufacturers in the world has made
TrainWorx a “first call” for custom layouts and
train furniture.
TrainWorx is also proud to be the studio of
choice for public and retail train displays by
Lionel LLC, as well as to develop and deliver
official Lionel licensed products and branded
accessories. We’re confident that our
decades of experience with model train
layouts is greatly strengthened by our
theatrical and experiential marketing roots.
This multi-discipline approach to your next
model train project will produce a true work of
art born through creative integration.
The Process
If you would like to have custom accessories, train
furniture, or a layout designed and built by T W
TrainWorx, give us a call at (214) 634-2965. The
process is relatively straight forward, as we charge on
a time and materials basis. Though each individual
custom project is different, the information below can
be used as a general guideline throughout the
process.
Step 1: General inquiry.
Step 2: Phone consultation with Traingineer staff.
Step 3: Site survey at customer’s request. $64.00 per
hour ($640.00 per day max) plus travel expenses.
Generally, photographs and accurate room
dimensions are sufficient in order to begin design and
construction drawings. However, upon client request,
our Chief Traingineer will be glad to conduct a site
visit and answer any questions you may have.
Step 4: Initial design sketch. $64.00 per hour.
Step 5: Ballpark estimate from T W TrainWorx
including all services requested from design to
installation.
Step 6: Design and construction drawings. $80.00 per
hour.
Step 7: After final drawings are approved by client, a
formal bid is issued.
Step 8: Customer signs off on the project, and a 50%
down payment is due according to the timelines
agreed upon in the bid.
Step 9: Customer receives progress photos and is
welcome to stop by the shop at any time to view
progress.
Step 10: Final payment is due, and the project ships
and is installed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Line item estimates are nice, but
I have a strict budget. What kind of
general turn-key pricing can you
give me for a custom layout?
A: While each custom project is
unique, a turn-key budget (concept,
design, build, crate, ship, install) will
generally range from $280 per sq
foot for a basic layout, $410 per
square foot for an heirloom layout,
and $595 or more per square foot
for a museum quality layout.
Q: How long does it take to design
and build a layout?
A: Depending on the size, a layout
can take from three weeks to three
months to deliver. Keep in mind that
the Holiday season tends to be very
busy, so a layout larger than a 5X9
should be committed to as early as
possible in order to guarantee
Christmas delivery. A project
manager will create a schedule for
you if you need delivery by a certain
date.
Q: I like the bridge kits and elevated
systems shown in your online store,
but I need a custom length or width.
What is the process for obtaining a
quote for this?
A: Steps 1 through 10 to your left
apply in this scenario. Keep in mind
that time and material costs will vary
depending on size, complexity, and
timing of the project.
Q: I’m pretty handy, and I’d like to
complete a portion of the work
myself. Can I order train furniture or
even a layout in various stages of
completion?
A: Absolutely. T W TrainWorx is a
custom shop, and we’d be happy to
deliver any project in any stage of
completion. Train furniture can be
shipped unassembled and
unpainted to fully assembled, and
anywhere in between. In addition,
layouts can be carried through to
any stage of completion you desire.
Q: I notice you have numerous
Lionel branded tables, bridges, and
other products. Is it possible to
customize my product with other
letters such as my last name?
A: Yes, however, the design fee for
redrawing the file is $78.00.
